A vibrant mosaic of paving and planting types creates a playful, flexible and robust network of varied functionality, spaces and activity levels. With small pockets that provide space for rest, breaks and activities, it caters to the diversity and needs of the students. The project seeks to create an inclusive outdoor environment with room for everyone.
The different project areas are linked together by a winding spatial sequence that picks up on differences in terrain and incorporates planting and seating. As spectators of the ball and running activities, the students are also engaged, which will add a sympathetic dynamic to the whole area. The ball courts and running track will naturally create a dynamic area with high activity. The proposed design of incorporating the perimeter zones into an activity space gives the whole area an additional dimension
The choice of materials is related to the facade of Rustenborg. The design and choice of materials together form an aesthetic and spatial context that gives the area identity and an inviting expression. The clinker paving has both a functional character as an access and escape route to the buildings. At the same time, they form a glacis towards the playing fields, absorbing the difference in level and giving the entire area character and content. In the courtyard, vertical displacements will contribute to the spatiality.
The bicycle parking is laid out in castle gravel with stairs and ramps in concrete tiles. Concrete is also used for ramps to the playing field and as seating on the tiled ice.
The planting is incorporated throughout the project area as a space-forming and unifying element. The planting gives the entire area character and is experienced both from inside the building and when visiting the area. The planting strengthens and supports the site’s narrative and contributes positively to strengthening biodiversity in the area. In this context, the existing trees provide a well-established starting point for the new planting. It is important that the area’s greenery has a greater visual focus than is the case today.
