Lundtofte Cemetery

BUILDER Lundtofte Cemetery

STATUS Awaiting Deanery processing

The development plan for Lundtofte Cemetery will emphasize the central locations of the church and the burial mound in a system of existing sight lines, partly preserve the traditional grave section, offer more variation in grave site shapes, increase biodiversity and, not least, strengthen the cemetery’s identity as a cemetery grove.

Arrival and church site

Our ambition for Hvalsø Børnehus is an institution in close proximity to the expression of nature that identifies Hvalsø and with a creativity in play and experience that is linked to the culture-bearing and identity-creating ties that characterize Hvalsø on both a large and small scale, such as the communities, sawmill, gravel pit, Lerbjergtårnet and Tadre Mølle.

Paths

The path marks the transition between the traditional and the new cemetery. The winding path leads the visitor on a journey of discovery through the cemetery and out into the other grave sections of the cemetery. It should be possible for everyone, including people with walking difficulties, parents with prams etc. to take an exciting and coherent walk through the cemetery. Existing paths with columnar branches and grassy areas form important axes between the church, cemetery and burial mound. These will be retained, but planted with ground cover. This will increase biodiversity and at the same time reduce operating costs.

Connection

In front of the church, the tree planting will be cleared so that the church is visible from all corners of the cemetery. Instead, a space will be created around and in front of the church that can serve as a meeting place and floor for various church events, outdoor services and celebrations.

The burial mound

In the burial section by the burial mound, smaller burial mounds are built as elevations in the area. They are a contribution to the expression and a reflection of the real burial mound. The special history associated with the burial mound is reinforced and communicated in the new spatiality as an important characteristic of Lundtofte Cemetery.

The section will be sown with meadow grass with mown grass paths. The existing and shared urn burial space is preserved. The section is planned with common unknown urn burials and unknown coffin in lawn.

peripheral zones

The cemetery will be framed with perimeter tree planting. The planting zone will act as a space delimiter, but will also adorn, green and shield the cemetery from noise.

paradise grove

The paradise grove is planted with fruit trees and flower meadows. Grass paths are mowed and insect hotels are established. The section is decorated with a coffin burial site.

the perennial section

The section’s current lawn will be transformed into perennial beds that give the planting height and space. To establish a durable and lush expression, robust and richly flowering perennial species are chosen. The section is planned with a known urn burial site.
